Main Specifications
Canaan has always gone its own way, and the Avalon A1346 is their direct answer to the hegemony of the Antminer S19 Pro in late 2022. Essentially, it’s a clone in terms of key specifications: 110 TH/s with a power consumption of 3300 W. Canaan didn’t try to outperform Bitmain in absolute numbers but offered the market a machine comparable in power and reliability, but in its proprietary design. For the market, this was a healthy sign, another strong player in the big league.
Now let’s get straight to the main point, the numbers, which in 2024 sound like a death sentence. The efficiency is exactly 30 J/Th. If two years ago this was the norm and allowed it to compete, today it’s already a technological chasm. The latest ASICs have moved far ahead, offering efficiency around 20 J/Th and below. This means that with the same electricity cost, the A1346 will earn significantly less and will go into the red much earlier than its modern counterparts.
But Canaan always has its engineering hallmark, and here it manifests itself in the design. A square, almost cubic form factor and, most interestingly, six fans. This is an atypical solution, probably aimed at a more even distribution of airflow and increased fault tolerance of the cooling system. However, this does not affect the noise level — it’s still the standard 75 dB, so don’t have any illusions about quiet mining.
Ultimately, the Avalon A1346 is a bright representative of its time, a robust but morally outdated machine. Today, its purchase is justified only under one of two conditions: if you found it on the secondary market at a bargain price, or if your electricity is almost free. For new construction, it is uncompetitive. It is a reliable but now inefficient soldier from the past, whose place is now in the rearguard of the mining industry.
