Hard Fork vs. Soft Fork: What's the Difference?

A fork (from the English “fork”) is a term that denotes a change or update to a blockchain protocol. Since blockchain is a decentralized system, making changes requires the consent of most participants. Depending on how these changes are implemented and whether they are compatible with old rules, forks are divided into two types: soft forks and hard forks.

Soft Fork: Backward Compatible Update

A soft fork is a protocol update that does not break old rules but merely tightens them or adds new ones. Nodes that have not updated can still interact with the network, as new blocks created under the new rules do not contradict the old ones.

Analogy: updating language rules.

Imagine that a new rule was introduced in the English language: now the word “color” can only be written as “colour”.

  • People who adopted the new rule (updated nodes) will consider the spelling “color” an error.
  • People who continue to live by the old rules (old nodes) will still understand those who write “colour,” as this word existed before.

Thus, the network does not split. Over time, most participants transition to the new, stricter rules, and the update is accepted by the entire network. For a soft fork to be adopted, it is sufficient for most miners to start creating blocks according to the new rules.

Example from Bitcoin: The activation of SegWit (Segregated Witness) in 2017 was a soft fork. This update changed the transaction structure but was compatible with older software versions.

Hard Fork: Radical Change and Chain Split

A hard fork is a protocol update that fundamentally changes the rules and is incompatible with previous versions. Blocks created under the new rules will be rejected by old nodes as invalid.

Analogy: switching to another language.

Imagine that a part of the community decided that starting tomorrow, the official language would be Spanish, not English.

  • Those who switched to Spanish (updated nodes) will no longer be able to communicate with those who remained in English (old nodes).
  • As a result, two separate, incompatible groups are formed.

If, after a hard fork, a part of the community (miners and users) decides not to accept the new rules and continues to support the old version of the protocol, a chain split occurs. As a result, two cryptocurrencies emerge from one, with a shared history up to the moment of the fork.

Example from Bitcoin: The creation of Bitcoin Cash (BCH) in 2017. Part of the community wanted to increase the block size, which required a hard fork. The other part was against it. In the end, a split occurred, and a new coin, BCH, appeared, while the original Bitcoin continued to exist.
