The WhatsMiner M56 is a prime example of MicroBT’s ability to flex its muscles, packing colossal power into an unconventional form factor. Delivering 194 TH/s, this unit was a true breakthrough in the world of liquid-cooled mining at its release in early 2023. Its primary goal is to provide maximum hashrate density in specialized farms where every inch of space counts. And its silent operation at 45 dB is not just a bonus, but a key advantage, allowing for a radical rethinking of the layout and soundproofing of mining facilities.

But behind the impressive power lies the main compromise – energy consumption. A staggering 5.5 kW of power translates into an energy efficiency rating of around 28.6 J/Th. By 2024 standards, when new flagships are breaking through the 16-19 J/Th mark, this is no longer competitive. Such an appetite makes the M56 extremely sensitive to electricity costs and eats up a significant portion of its potential profit, which is clearly visible when compared to more modern counterparts with the same hashrate.

The entire M56 design screams industrial purpose. Its elongated and narrow body is designed for vertical installation in the cassettes of liquid cooling systems. Like any “hydro” unit, it requires external infrastructure for heat dissipation – dry cooling towers and pump stations. It is not a standalone device, but an element of a complex engineering system. This is its strength and its weakness: it offers silence and stability, but requires significant initial investment and professional maintenance.

So, what’s the verdict? The WhatsMiner M56 is a heavyweight veteran. It still possesses an impressive punch in terms of hashrate, but its endurance (energy efficiency) no longer allows it to compete on equal terms with the younger champions. Today, its niche is for sites with access to ultra-cheap or virtually free electricity, where high kilowatt consumption is not a critical factor. For everyone else, it serves as a vivid reminder of how quickly time and technology fly by in the world of mining.
